{"id":153887,"date":"2017-12-24T17:30:41","date_gmt":"2017-12-24T16:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/?p=153887"},"modified":"2017-12-24T21:35:42","modified_gmt":"2017-12-24T20:35:42","slug":"nativity-lord-dizonreyes-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/nativity-lord-dizonreyes-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Nativity of the Lord (Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Food for all that gives life and saves<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Already at birth, Jesus offers himself as the food that gives life and saves.\u00a0 Unless we eat his flesh and drink his blood, we have no life within us.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Mary does not lay her child in a crib.\u00a0 Rather, she lays him, wrapped in swaddling clothes, in a manger, which holds the food for animals.\u00a0 That is because she and Joseph have received no welcome in the inn.\u00a0 Right after birth, then, Jesus reveals himself as the necessary food that, unfortunately, many find unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>And this revelation is key, as the angel points out.\u00a0 The sign he gives to the shepherds is the \u201cchild in swaddling clothes that is lying in a manger.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, to know the Savior is to know him as an outcast who loves, however, to the end.<\/p>\n<p>That is how surprising Jesus\u2019 love is.\u00a0 There is something unusual about this heir to the throne of David:\u00a0 he is poor and lowly at birth.\u00a0 He does not even have a place to stay as he comes into the world (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1034&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN IX:51<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Already from birth, moreover, he is not one of the kings who seek to grab everything to swallow it all up.\u00a0 On the contrary, he shows that he is willing to become our food, to give himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness.\u00a0 His wishes us life and life to the full.\u00a0 He wants us to enjoy in wonder and forever his counsels, his peace, justice and mercy.<\/p>\n<p>And the child Jesus does not dazzle with the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father.\u00a0 His glory simply draws us to \u201can infant, \u2026 a weak and powerless God\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1036&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XII:165<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Nor does Jesus use his power to strike fear into people\u2019s heart, as do Caesar Augustus and Quirinius.\u00a0 He shares it with us, rather, so that we may become his brothers and sisters, and the children of God.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>We become such as we, like Mary and Joseph, embrace the child Jesus with humility and in wonder.\u00a0 Our embrace of the child born to us proves true, when we become food for others.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We know Jesus, yes, when we know him as the one who lays down his life for us.\u00a0 Such knowledge means we ought to lay down our life for our brothers and sisters.\u00a0 That is how &#8220;inventive to infinity&#8221; our love ought to be also (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1011&amp;context=coste_sp\">SV.EN XI:131<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, we will remain in death.\u00a0 We will likewise be among those who say, \u201cThis teaching is hard.\u00a0 Who can accept it?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Lord Jesus, we celebrate your birth.\u00a0 Grant us to see you, the Savior of the world, as though a nobody, under the form of a child (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1031&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN VI:170<\/a>). \u00a0Draw us also to your lowliness, and turn us into food for others. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>25 December 2017<br \/>\nNativity of the Lord<br \/>\nIs 9, 1-6;
