{"id":153454,"date":"2017-02-28T20:00:43","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T19:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/?p=153454"},"modified":"2017-02-28T21:24:47","modified_gmt":"2017-02-28T20:24:47","slug":"1st-sunday-lent-ross-reyes-dizon-tempting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/1st-sunday-lent-ross-reyes-dizon-tempting\/","title":{"rendered":"1st Sunday of Lent (Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Tempting but destructive suggestion<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Jesus is God-Man.\u00a0 He himself unmasks the deceit in the devil\u2019s tempting suggestion:\u00a0 it is either God or man.<\/h3>\n<p>From the perspective of our faith in the Word made flesh, we cannot but reject such tempting suggestion. \u00a0It is not true that one must choose either God or the human being.\u00a0 God and humans are compatible.\u00a0 And those saying otherwise are laying out a <a href=\"https:\/\/ejournals.bc.edu\/ojs\/index.php\/ctsa\/article\/viewFile\/2737\/2377\">false dilemma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Undoubtedly, the claim that we can better ourselves by disobeying God is alluring and tempting.\u00a0 But it is still absurd.\u00a0 That is because if God were to oppose human fulfillment, he would have no reason to create us in the first place.\u00a0 And it would be even more senseless for him to create us in his image.<\/p>\n<p>So then, what is true and makes sense is that our Creator wants us to be like him. Moreover, he reveals to us through Jesus how humanity can arrive at divinity.\u00a0 The two meet and kiss in the one who makes us righteous through his obedience.<\/p>\n<h4>Way of humble obedience, not of tempting disobedience<\/h4>\n<p>Jesus discredits the tempting suggestion that to attain our human freedom, we need to free ourselves from divine enslavement.\u00a0 That is because it is precisely due to his being human to the utmost that Jesus is divine.\u00a0 That is to say, he humbles himself, becoming obedient even to death.\u00a0 Because of this, God lifts him up, giving him the name that is above every name.<\/p>\n<p>But do we not betray our faith because of our <a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2017\/02\/23\/pope_dont_put_off_conversion,_give_up_a_double_life\/1294470\">double life<\/a>?\u00a0 Double life shows that we do not find any compatibility between Christian religion and daily human life.<\/p>\n<p>Do we not deny our supposed adherence to the Suffering Servant, resplendent on the cross, by behaving like opportunists?\u00a0 They take advantage of their powerful condition for their personal needs and gains, without considering the helpless.\u00a0 And to meet their cravings for power, they leverage their powerful and influential relatives and friends.<\/p>\n<p>Does not our hunger for splendor stand in the way of our being righteous and merciful?\u00a0 Such hunger is blinding, too.\u00a0 Because of it, we may not see <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/messages\/lent\/documents\/papa-francesco_20161018_messaggio-quaresima2017.html\"> the gift of the other person or the gift of the Word<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, one thing is to witness to the Word made flesh through our words and another thing to give the same witness through our works.\u00a0 We embrace God not so much with our sweet words as with the strength of our arms and the sweat of our brows (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1037&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XI:32<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><em>Lord, you are the life-giving communion between God and humans beings.\u00a0 Make us find your life so tempting that we give unassailable witness to the same communion.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>5 March 2017<br \/>\n1<sup>st<\/sup> Sunday of Lent (A)<br \/>\nGen 2, 7-9; 3, 1-7; Rom 5, 12-19; Mt 4, 1-11<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tempting but destructive suggestion Jesus is God-Man.\u00a0 He himself unmasks the deceit in the devil\u2019s tempting suggestion:\u00a0 it is either God or man.
