(Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Publicans who confess and plead<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Jesus personifies the attitude of publicans who do as the publican in the parable of the Pharisee and the publican.<\/h3>\n<p>The parable shows that Jesus is not unfair at all toward the weak.\u00a0 He hears the needy of all kinds, the marginalized, the excluded.\u00a0 Among these, of course, are the publicans who are agents of the hated Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/famvin.org\/en\/ross-reyes-dizon-sunday-readings-facebook\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60215\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60215\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/famvin.org\/en\/files\/2015\/11\/ross-reyes-dizon-sunday-readings-facebook.png?resize=846%2C442\" alt=\"ross-reyes-dizon-sunday-readings-facebook\" width=\"846\" height=\"442\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The publicans are Jews, but their fellow-Jews consider them Gentiles.\u00a0 In the eyes of observant Jews, moreover, of the Pharisees in particular, publicans are public sinners.\u00a0 That is why one has to avoid their company.\u00a0 The Pharisees, therefore, takes offense that Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them.<\/p>\n<p>But self-righteous critics who despise everyone else does not deter Jesus. He warns them, \u201cWhoever exalts himself will be humbled and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.\u201d\u00a0 He also indicates that, like his Father\u00a0he does not see the appearance, but looks into the heart.\u00a0 And he makes clear what stance before God one should take that leads to justification.<\/p>\n<p>The stance that leads to salvation is not the stance of the one who sings his own praises (cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/famvin.org\/wiki\/Common_Rules_-_Chapters_VI_-_XII\">CRCM XII, 3<\/a>).\u00a0 There is no justification for someone who exalts himself at the expense of the neighbor, pretending all the while to be thankful.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, those who confess that they are sinners are the ones who please God and draw the attention of their merciful Creator.\u00a0 They tremble at God\u2019s sharp, penetrating and purifying word.<\/p>\n<h4>And this humble stance is Jesus\u2019 own stance.<\/h4>\n<p>Not only has Jesus become sin for our sake, but also a curse.\u00a0 He affirms, \u201cNo one is good but God alone.\u201d \u00a0Thus does he question even the one who calls him good.\u00a0 With loud cries and tears, too, he offers supplications to one who can save him.\u00a0\u00a0Finally, he humbles himself and obeys to the point of pouring out himself as a libation on the cross. Because of this, God exalts him greatly and gives him the name that is above every name.<\/p>\n<p>Our Teacher and Master gives us disciples a model to follow.\u00a0 Indeed, discipleship commits us to the humility of the publicans who confess and plead. To be disciples is to <a href=\"http:\/\/famvin.org\/en\/2016\/10\/12\/vincent-de-paul-gods-gaze\/?noredirect=en_US\">see things also as Jesus sees them<\/a>.\u00a0 Moreover, the worthy celebration of the Lord\u2019s Supper requires every participant to confess at the outset:<\/p>\n<p><em>O God, be merciful to me a sinner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>October 23, 2016<br \/>\n30<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in O.T.
