(Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Sinners we human beings all are<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Jesus is one with us sinners.\u00a0 Just like his Father, he takes no pleasure in our death, but rather in our conversion, that we may live.<\/h3>\n<p>Jesus is concerned about sinners, which shocks the Pharisees and the scribes.\u00a0 They complain, \u201cThis man welcomes sinners and eats with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesus does not deny he is friends of sinners.\u00a0 He defends himself, however, using examples from human experience.<\/p>\n<p>First, he indicates that only those who do not know a sheep-owner\u2019s concern for every sheep find welcoming sinners questionable.\u00a0 In the same vein, those who do not understand the happiness of a woman who has just found a lost coin consider eating with sinners problematic.\u00a0 In contrast, those who know God\u2019s concern for his children find welcoming sinners natural and understandable.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, Jesus suggests that it will be hard to know him as a kind brother if we think we are deserving of God\u2019s grace.\u00a0 And it is easy to come to the belief that God owes us something because of our strict observance of the commandments.<\/p>\n<p>That is how the elder son thinks.\u00a0 He expects something more from his father for his years of obedient service.\u00a0 He is the one who deserves a banquet, and not the one who has wasted patrimonial assets.\u00a0 According to this thinking, there are the deserving and the undeserving.\u00a0 In effect, then, one fosters division.<\/p>\n<p>But if truth be told, grace is not due to us.\u00a0 Did we deserve it because of our works, then grace would not be grace.\u00a0 God even lavishes his grace on blasphemers.\u00a0 And the new Moses dismisses the promise, \u201cI will make you a great nation,\u201d which perhaps is the reason why St. Vincent de Paul says, \u201cIt is not enough for me to love God if my neighbor does not love him\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1036&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XII:215<\/a>). \u00a0And one more thing\u2014if we deserve anything, it is the punishment that comes with our sins.<\/p>\n<h4>In need of a savior<\/h4>\n<p>God watches us and sees that we all stray, depraved, everyone.\u00a0 There is not a good man left, not even one.\u00a0 And the fuller and more acute our awareness of the human condition of sin and death, the more prompt and resolute our proclamation, \u201cThanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.\u201d\u00a0 The more conscious we are, as St. Vincent, of our absolute poverty and complete unrighteousness before God, with greater readiness we will abandon ourselves to divine mercy (cf.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1028&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN III:143<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We address to Jesus Christ the acclamation, \u201cYou alone are the holy One!\u201d\u00a0 Hence, he alone can save us.\u00a0 Moreover, he is within our reach, since his tent is in the same camp as our tents.\u00a0 He calls us to conversion and new life.\u00a0 He eagerly longs that we partake of his banquet, sign and seal of the New Covenant.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lord Jesus, grant that we reflect your mercy by welcoming sinners.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>September 11, 2016<br \/>\n24<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in O.T.
