{"id":109869,"date":"2014-11-08T07:17:06","date_gmt":"2014-11-08T06:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/?p=109869"},"modified":"2016-07-12T18:03:27","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:03:27","slug":"dedication-of-the-lateran-basilica-jose-antonio-pagola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/dedication-of-the-lateran-basilica-jose-antonio-pagola\/","title":{"rendered":"Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (Jos\u00e9 Antonio Pagola)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>What is our religion like?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The story of Jesus\u2019 intervention in the Jerusalem temple is recorded in all four gospels.\u00a0 It is John who describes his reaction in the most graphic way: <strong>with a whip, Jesus drives out of the sacred temple area <\/strong>the animals for sacrifice that are being sold, overturns the money-changers\u2019 tables and spills their coins.\u00a0 A cry comes out of his lips: \u201cStop making my Father\u2019s house a marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>This gesture will trigger his arrest and swift execution<\/strong>.\u00a0 To attack the temple is to attack the heart of the Jewish people. The temple is the center of their religious, social and economic life.\u00a0 It is untouchable.\u00a0 The God of Israel dwells there.\u00a0 Yet Jesus feels like stranger in that place\u2014the temple is not his Father\u2019s house, but rather a marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes this intervention of Jesus has been seen as his effort to \u201cpurify\u201d a religion that is too primitive, in order to replace it with a more worthy worship and with rites that are less bloody.\u00a0 There is something more radical, however, to his prophetic gesture: <strong>God cannot be an accessory to a religion in which everyone seeks one\u2019s own interest<\/strong>.\u00a0 Jesus cannot see in such a religion this \u201cfamily of God\u201d that has begun to form with his first men and women disciples.<\/p>\n<p>No one in that temple remembers the poor and hungry rural folks he has left behind in the villages of Galilee.\u00a0 <strong>The Father of the poor cannot rule out of this temple<\/strong>.\u00a0 With his prophetic gesture, Jesus is denouncing radically a religious, political and economic system that is forgetful of the least of the people, God\u2019s favorites.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 action should put us his followers on our guard, so that we may ask ourselves <strong>what religion we are practicing in our temples<\/strong>.\u00a0 If it is not inspired by Jesus, it can turn into a \u201choly\u201d way of closing ourselves to the project that God has wanted to foster in the world.\u00a0 The religion of those who follow Jesus must always be at the service of God\u2019s kingdom and his justice.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>we need to check if our communities are a space where all of us can feel we are in \u201cthe Father\u2019s house<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0a welcoming community that closes its doors to no one and which excludes no one and discriminates against nobody, a house where we learn to listen to the suffering of the weakest and not just to our own interests.<\/p>\n<p>Let us not forget that Christianity is a prophetic religion, born of Jesus\u2019 Spirit in order to pave the way for the kingdom of God, building a more human world where all are brothers and sisters, and headed thus toward its definitive salvation in God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Pagola<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>November 9, 2014<br \/>\nDedication of the Lateran Church<br \/>\nJohn 2, 13-22<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is our religion like?
