{"id":109561,"date":"2014-03-29T07:17:05","date_gmt":"2014-03-29T06:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/?p=109561"},"modified":"2016-07-10T17:27:50","modified_gmt":"2016-07-10T15:27:50","slug":"fourth-sunday-of-lent-jose-antonio-pagola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/fourth-sunday-of-lent-jose-antonio-pagola\/","title":{"rendered":"Fourth Sunday of Lent (Jos\u00e9 Antonio Pagola)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>For the excluded<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>He is blind from birth<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is neither his nor his parents\u2019 fault, but his destiny will be marked forever.\u00a0 People look at him as a sinner who is punished by God.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 disciples ask him whose is the sin, the blind man\u2019s or his parents\u2019.\u00a0 Jesus sees him in a different light.\u00a0 Since he has seen him, he only thinks of rescuing him from that miserable life of a beggar who is despised by all as a sinner.\u00a0 Jesus feels called by God to defend, welcome, and cure precisely those who live excluded and humiliated.<\/p>\n<p>After a laborious cure in which he also has to collaborate with Jesus, the blind man discovers light for the first time.\u00a0<strong> The encounter with Jesus has changed his life<\/strong>.\u00a0 Finally he can enjoy a life of dignity, without fear of being ashamed in front of anyone.<\/p>\n<p>He is mistaken.\u00a0 <strong>The religious leaders feel obligated to control the purity of religion<\/strong>.\u00a0 They know who is a sinner and who is not.\u00a0 They will decide if he can be accepted into the religious community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cured beggar openly confesses that it was Jesus who came to him and cured him<\/strong>, but Pharisees, irked, rejected him: \u00a0\u201cWe know that this man is a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 The man insists on defending Jesus: \u00a0he is a prophet, he is from God.\u00a0 The Pharisees cannot bear with him: \u00a0\u201cYou were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Gospel writer says that \u201cwhen Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him.\u201d\u00a0 The exchange is brief.\u00a0 When Jesus asks him if he believes in the Messiah, the one thrown out says: \u00a0\u201cWho is he, sir, so that I may believe in him.\u201d\u00a0 Moved, Jesus answers him: \u00a0He is not far from you.\u00a0 \u201cYou have seen him; the one speaking with you is he.\u201d\u00a0 The beggar tells him: \u201cI do believe, Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is how Jesus is.\u00a0 <strong>He always comes to meet those who are not given official welcome by religion<\/strong>.\u00a0 He does not abandon those who seek and love him though they are excluded from religious communities and institutions.\u00a0 Those who do not have a place in our churches have a special place in his heart.<\/p>\n<p>Who will bring Jesus\u2019 message today to those group of people who, at any time, can hear unjust public condemnations from blind religious leaders, to those who go to Christian celebrations afraid of being recognized, those who cannot receive communion in peace at our Masses, those who are forced to live their faith in Jesus in the silence of their hearts, almost secretly, clandestinely?\u00a0 Friends whom I do not know, both men and women, do not forget it: \u00a0<strong>when Christians reject you, Jesus welcomes you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Pagola<\/b><\/p>\n<p>March 30, 2014<br \/>\n4 Lent (A)<br \/>\nJohn 9, 1-41<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the excluded He is blind from birth.\u00a0 It is neither his nor his parents\u2019 fault, but his destiny will be marked forever.\u00a0 People look at him as a sinner who is punished by God.\u00a0 &#8230;
