Let him become a fool so as to be wise (1 Cor 3, 18)<\/i><\/p>\n

We can belong to Christ and his kingdom only if we prefer divine folly
\nto human wisdom and remember always and fondly the fool who died for sinners.<\/p>\n

What is normal is to treat the neighbor as he treats us.\u00a0 Does he love us?\u00a0 So, we love him.\u00a0 We hate him if he hates us.\u00a0 What is righteous:\u00a0 an eye for an eye.\u00a0 What is unrighteous:\u00a0 two eyes for an eye or one eye for two eyes.<\/p>\n

But the righteousness that Jesus lived and taught is based in divine superabundance, not in human equivalence.\u00a0 It demands that we go beyond \u201cI give you so may give me\u201d (Pope Francis) and be perfect like our Father who \u201cmakes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.\u201d<\/p>\n

This non-meritocratic superabundance, along with the Master who teaches it with authority, astonishes us.\u00a0 But astonishment does not translate automatically into acceptance without reservation.\u00a0 We harbor doubts that do not stay hidden.<\/p>\n

Our resistance to the call to perfection is noticeable in the excuse, \u201cI am just a human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

We distinguish between deserving and undeserving poor.\u00a0 Perhaps we even support a politician more than we support applicants for general assistance, for whom\u00a0a politician\u00a0is proposing a law that will require\u00a0them to take a drug test first.<\/p>\n

It must be admitted that many make huge donation from their surplus wealth. \u00a0But it must be acknowledged also that there are not a few of us who find imitating the poor widow, who gave all she has to live on, quite impossible.<\/p>\n

Perhaps we gladly give food the hungry, but do we go the extra mile by recognizing their dignity\u2014as St. Vincent de Paul did with his \u201cwhite tablecloth<\/a>\u201d\u2014or by promoting systemic change?\u00a0 The good Samaritan did not just provide first aid; he saw to the full recovery of the half-dead, a stranger and perhaps an enemy.<\/p>\n

And we have today\u2019s Lamechs, who wish death to one who wounds them and seek seven-fold vengeance\u2014not to mention \u201cjust\u201d wars that compound rather than solve problems.<\/p>\n

Faustus of Riez spoke of the Old Testament being diluted into letter.\u00a0 If we water down the wine at the wedding at Cana, then our continuity with the law and the prophets does not consist so much in Jesus affirming them as in our returning to the old ministry of the deadly letter, not of the vivifying Spirit.<\/p>\n

Better than this continuity is rupture.\u00a0 Let the foolishness of the Christian ideal be tried, so that it may no longer be said:\u00a0 \u201cThe Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried\u201d (G.K. Chesterton).\u00a0 May we see Christian wisdom in what appears foolish to human eyes (Coste XI, 131).\u00a0 Let us not be ashamed of our celebration of Jesus\u2019 death until he comes, even when hedonists make fun of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
