{"id":106001,"date":"2012-12-15T02:35:59","date_gmt":"2012-12-15T01:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/blog\/second-sunday-of-advent-jose-antonio-pagola-2\/"},"modified":"2016-07-12T18:25:27","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:25:27","slug":"third-sunday-of-advent-jose-antonio-pagola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/third-sunday-of-advent-jose-antonio-pagola\/","title":{"rendered":"Third Sunday of Advent (Jos\u00e9 Antonio Pagola)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong><strong><strong><strong>What can we do?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The preaching of the <strong>Baptist<\/strong> shook the conscience of many.\u00a0 That desert prophet was saying in a loud voice what they were feeling in their hearts:\u00a0 it was necessary to change, to return to God, to prepare oneself to welcome the Messiah.\u00a0 Some approached him with this question:\u00a0 What can we do?<\/p>\n<p>The Baptist has very clear ideas.\u00a0 <strong>He does not propose that they add new religious practices to their life.<\/strong>\u00a0 He does not ask them to remain in the desert doing penance.\u00a0 He does not speak to them of new precepts.\u00a0 One must welcome the Messiah by looking attentively at the needy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He is not lost in sublime theories\u00a0<\/strong>or in profound motivations. \u00a0Directly, in the purest prophetic style, he summarizes everything in a genial formula:\u00a0 \u201cWhoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none; and whoever has food should do likewise.\u201d\u00a0 And we, what can we do to welcome Christ in the midst of this society in crisis?<\/p>\n<p>First of all, let us strive even more to know what is happening:\u00a0 <strong>lack of information is the primary cause of our passivity.<\/strong>\u00a0 Furthermore, let us not tolerate lie or the covering up of the truth.\u00a0 We have to know in all its harshness the suffering that is being brought about unjustly among us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A life of sporadic generosity, or of dependence on it, is not enough.\u00a0 We can take steps toward a more sober life.<\/strong> \u00a0Let us dare to do the experiment of \u201cmaking ourselves poor\u201d little by little, cutting down on our current comfortable living standard, so as to share with the neediest so many things that we really do not need in order to live<\/p>\n<p>We can be especially attentive to those who have fallen into serious situations of social exclusion:\u00a0 those who are left without homes due to evictions, those deprived of adequate healthcare, those without income or any kind of social recourse \u2026<strong>\u00a0 We have to go out instinctively in defense of those who are sinking into helplessness and the lack of motivation to face their future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from Christian communities, we can develop diverse initiatives to be close to the most hurtful cases of social abandonment:\u00a0 concrete knowledge of situations, mobilization of persons <strong>so that nobody is left alone<\/strong>, contribution of material resources, management of possible aids \u2026.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis is going to be long. \u00a0In the coming years we are going to be offered the opportunity to humanize our crazed consumerism, to become more sensitive to the suffering of victims, to grow in practical solidarity, to contribute to the denouncing of the lack of compassion in managing the crisis .\u2026\u00a0 <strong>It will be our way of welcoming Christ more truthfully in our lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Pagola<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>December 16, 2012<br \/>\n3 Advent (C)<br \/>\nLuke 3:10-18<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What can we do?
