Mon bon ami,<\/p>\n

J’ai re\u00e7u hier ta seconde lettre et je m’empresse de te r\u00e9pondre.<\/p>\n

Je me suis acquitt\u00e9 de ta commission pour Fortoul; je lui ai \u00e9crit; demain je remplirai la t\u00e2che que Privat t’avait donn\u00e9e; ce sont de bien petits services, je voudrais t’en pouvoir rendre de plus grands.<\/p>\n

Les marques d’amiti\u00e9 que tu me prodigues me touchent fort : oui, nous serons toujours amis. Les nuages qui ont troubl\u00e9 notre intimit\u00e9, ceux qui troublent encore ton \u00e2me dispara\u00eetront bient\u00f4t, je l’esp\u00e8re. J’avoue que ta premi\u00e8re lettre m‘<\/sup>a fait une profonde blessure. Je g\u00e9missais d’\u00eatre ton ami; car moi, faible et chancelant que je suis, il suffirait pour m’\u00e9garer des s\u00e9ductions amicales d’un camarade bien-aim\u00e9; si un aveugle en conduit un autre, ils rouleront tous deux dans l’ab\u00eeme. Et cependant je sentais que mon amiti\u00e9 ne pourrait finir, qu’elle tenait au fond de mon c\u0153ur. \u00ab Malheureux, abandonn\u00e9 au milieu du tourbillon de la capitale, avec des amis qui ne croient plus, que deviendra ma croyance et, si ma croyance succombe, que deviendra ma vertu qu’elle seule peut soutenir? Eh bien, je les aimerai toujours, mais je me ferai violence pour ne pas les voir trop souvent, pour ne pas m’exposer \u00e0 leurs insinuations funestes et cependant voil\u00e0 que mon pauvre Materne aura besoin de moi et j’aurai besoin de lui… que ferai-je? \u00bb Telles \u00e9taient mes pens\u00e9es; ta seconde lettre m’a rassur\u00e9 quelque peu. Tout n’est pas–<\/sup>perdu, s’il reste un sentiment profond, religieux, au fond de ton \u00e2me, ce sentiment te ram\u00e8nera au catho\u00adlicisme compris d’une mani\u00e8re large et profonde. Oh! ne repousse pas les consolations qu’il t’offre; quant \u00e0 moi (je te r\u00e9v\u00e8le un secret), sans le catholicisme, je ne serais plus : je me serais plong\u00e9 dans un ab\u00eeme de vices, puis je me serais donn\u00e9 la mort. C’est en fr\u00e9missant que je te fais cet aveu, mais je dois rendre t\u00e9moignage \u00e0 la doctrine qui m’a sauv\u00e9, qui posuit animam meam ad vitam. Ne t’effraye pas de tes combats, de tes d\u00e9go\u00fbts … moi aussi souvent je les \u00e9prouve, mais ce sont choses passag\u00e8res, au-dessus desquelles un homme doit se placer. Il faut p\u00e9n\u00e9trer le sens intime et symbolique des pratiques; il faut les envisager d’une mani\u00e8re savante et \u00e9lev\u00e9e; il faut se livrer aux \u00e9motions douces de la gr\u00e2ce quand elle vient, et ne pas rougir de quelques larmes vers\u00e9es le soir, au pied des autels … Mais ceci est peut-\u00eatre de trop … tu n’en es pas encore l\u00e0; il faut que je laisse se calmer tes douleurs.<\/p>\n

En attendant, je crois que de profondes sympathies nous uniront toujours; j’irai te rejoindre bient\u00f4t, nous causerons de tout ceci ensemble.<\/p>\n
