Mon cher ami,<\/p>\n

Nos deux lettres se sont crois\u00e9es; quand j’ai eu la tienne, il \u00e9tait trop tard pour pouvoir t’envoyer ton cahier. Mais le voici bien et d\u00fbment empaquet\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Tu as peut-\u00eatre trouv\u00e9 ma lettre d’hier peu de ton go\u00fbt. Que veux-tu? Je devais te dire ce que je pensais, mais maintenant que je te l’ai dit, je n’y reviendrai plus; nous ne parlerons plus de cela. Je songerai plut\u00f4t \u00e0 me faire conna\u00eetre de toi de plus en plus.<\/p>\n

Tout ce que tu m’as dit hier de ta jalousie pour moi, tout cela est vrai de la mienne pour toi. Mais j’appellerai plut\u00f4t cela \u00e9mulation que jalousie. D\u00e8s lors je t’aimais beaucoup, j’aurais voulu \u00eatre premier et que tu fusses premier avec moi. Mais je ne voulais pas rester en arri\u00e8re; il m’est m\u00eame arriv\u00e9 de d\u00e9sirer que tu fisses moins bien que moi!… Mais crois-moi, oublions ces torts r\u00e9ciproques pour nous aimer l’un l’autre tous les jours davantage. Plus d’\u00e9mulation entre nous.<\/p>\n

Et moi aussi, j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 quelquefois bien injustement jaloux de mon petit fr\u00e8re (mais jamais de mon fr\u00e8re a\u00een\u00e9), et moi aussi j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 soup\u00e7onneux. J’ai eu contre tout le monde, m\u00eame envers ceux que j’aimais, des soup\u00e7ons abominables qui me faisaient tressaillir d’horreur, mais que ma malheureuse imagination poursuivait avec ardeur. Malheureux que je suis! Que de pens\u00e9es non seulement voluptueuses, mais encore sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates, criminelles, barbares, m’ont tourment\u00e9 autrefois et me tourmentent encore, quoique devenues plus rares. Mon imagination les saisit, les poursuit, puis je reviens \u00e0 moi-m\u00eame. Je fr\u00e9mis, je tressaille d’horreur! J’en ai eu de ces pens\u00e9es contre mes parents, mes amis, toi-m\u00eame. On me dit que ce ne sont que de violentes tentations, que mon consentement seul peut me rendre coupable et je ne sais pas bien si j’y ai jamais consenti. Je sais au contraire que depuis 8 ans qu’elles m’assi\u00e8gent, je les ai presque toujours (si ce n’est toujours) repouss\u00e9es avec horreur. Mais malheureu\u00adsement mon imagination m’y tient arr\u00eat\u00e9 malgr\u00e9 l’horreur que j’en con\u00e7ois. Cependant elles commencent \u00e0 passer. Oh! si tu savais comme ces pens\u00e9es me font souffrir! Je ne sais aussi quel go\u00fbt j’ai pour les histoires de massacres et mon imagination semble s’y complaire quoique mon c\u0153ur fr\u00e9misse. Malheureux! je l’ai trop nourrie, cette imagination. J’ai nourri ma plus cruelle ennemie. Je lutte tout entier contre elle et que de fois je suis vaincu! Qu’il m’en co\u00fbte de te faire cette ouverture que j’avais oubli\u00e9e. Que vais-je para\u00eetre \u00e0 tes yeux?<\/p>\n

Je ne terminerai pas cette lettre sans te dire que, comme toi, je suis sans cesse accabl\u00e9 des bienfaits de mes excellents parents, que mon p\u00e8re, mon bon p\u00e8re, assez \u00e0 l’aise pour pouvoir se retirer d’un \u00e9tat tr\u00e8s p\u00e9nible et prendre un repos dont il a grand besoin, continue de travailler uniquement pour ses enfans. L’espace me manque pour en dire plus.<\/p>\n
