Il a publi\u00e9 des traductions classiques d&amp;rsquo;auteurs latins, grecs et allemands. Son p\u00e8re \u00e9tait n\u00e9gociant \u00e0 Lyon.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>Maman vient de m&rsquo;apporter de Lyon la lettre que tu as bien voulu m&rsquo;\u00e9crire. Rien de plus \u00e9tonn\u00e9 que moi \u00e0 la r\u00e9ception d&rsquo;une lettre de Materne. Je tremblais d\u00e9j\u00e0 qu&rsquo;il ne te f\u00fbt arriv\u00e9 quelque accident, quelque malheur&#8230; J&rsquo;ouvre ta lettre. Je lis et je suis agr\u00e9ablement surpris de n&rsquo;y trouver que les bons conseils d&rsquo;un bon ami. La seule chose qui m&rsquo;a pein\u00e9, c&rsquo;est de voir que tu prenais tant de d\u00e9tours pour me dire ce que tu pensais. Au fait, avocat.<\/p>\n<p>J&rsquo;en viens \u00e0 la cause, elle est fort bien plaid\u00e9e. Mais je suis f\u00e2ch\u00e9 de n&rsquo;\u00eatre pas aupr\u00e8s de toi pour en causer de vive voix. Je te dirais que je pense comme toi qu&rsquo;on pourrait peut-\u00eatre mal interpr\u00e9ter mes intentions, que je crois cependant les avoir exprim\u00e9es tr\u00e8s clairement, puisque une des premi\u00e8res phrases contient ces mots: \u00abPleurons sur le malheur de nos fr\u00e8res opprim\u00e9s, pleurons sur la cruaut\u00e9 de nos fr\u00e8res oppresseurs.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>De plus, j&rsquo;ai bien remarqu\u00e9, comme tu me l&rsquo;as fait observer toi-m\u00eame, l&rsquo;esclavage intellectuel et moral r\u00e9uni \u00e0 l&rsquo;esclavage corporel: c&rsquo;est une des pens\u00e9es dominantes de ma lettre. J&rsquo;ai m\u00eame ajout\u00e9 que le christianisme, d\u00e9livrant ces peuples de l&rsquo;esclavage intellectuel et moral et leur donnant la libert\u00e9 des enfants de Dieu, devait aussi les affranchir de la servitude corporelle.<\/p>\n<p>Je me suis donc efforc\u00e9 de montrer la propri\u00e9t\u00e9, sans en faire une autorit\u00e9 pour les barbares partisans de la traite des n\u00e8gres, que j&rsquo;ai comme toi en horreur.<\/p>\n<p>Quant \u00e0 l&rsquo;objet de cette proph\u00e9tie, je crois qu&rsquo;on peut lui donner l&rsquo;extension que je lui ai attribu\u00e9e. Car, dit un grand auteur (je crois que c&rsquo;est Newton), on doit juger des proph\u00e9ties par l&rsquo;\u00e9v\u00e9nement. Or la proph\u00e9tie annon\u00e7ant un esclavage en termes g\u00e9n\u00e9raux et l&rsquo;esclavage \u00e9tant g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et complet dans la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, rien n&#8217;emp\u00eache, [ce] me semble, l&rsquo;application que j&rsquo;en ai faite. Mon assertion est fortifi\u00e9e par cette observation que je te prie de v\u00e9rifier, c&rsquo;est que souvent les pr\u00e9dictions dans l&rsquo;Ecriture s&rsquo;appliquent \u00e9galement aux deux ordres de ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes physiques et intellectuels. Telle est celle de la ruine de J\u00e9rusalem et de la punition des Juifs. En m\u00eame temps .qu&rsquo;ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 chass\u00e9s et dispers\u00e9s, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 frapp\u00e9s d&rsquo;aveuglement, d&rsquo;endurcissement. Il en est de m\u00eame de cette autre pr\u00e9diction de l&rsquo;Ecriture: \u00abTu mangeras ton pain \u00e0 la sueur de ton front\u00bb qui s&rsquo;applique \u00e0 la nourriture de l&rsquo;\u00e2me comme \u00e0 celle du corps.<\/p>\n<p>Voil\u00e0 bien des mots inutiles, \u00e0 ce moment tu as peut-\u00eatre le dernier num\u00e9ro de l&rsquo;<em>Abeille<\/em>. S&rsquo;il y est, tu peux en juger sans tant de bavardage de ma part; s&rsquo;il n&rsquo;y est pas, tous mes raisonnements ne servent \u00e0 rien et je me soumets volontiers au jugement des personnes \u00e9clair\u00e9es qui dirigent le journal. Car, ainsi que tu me l&rsquo;as exprim\u00e9, si cet article peut \u00eatre contraire \u00e0 la justice, aux bonnes m\u0153urs, si l&rsquo;on peut l&rsquo;interpr\u00e9ter mal, j&rsquo;aime cent fois mieux ne pas le voir imprim\u00e9. S&rsquo;il en e\u00fbt \u00e9t\u00e9 tems [sic], je l&rsquo;aurais retir\u00e9 pour le relire avec toi. Mais maintenant, <em>jacta est alea<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Permets-moi \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent de te dire que tu m&rsquo;as bien fait rire en louant mon z\u00e8le pour la lecture de la Sainte Bible, en me parlant de ma r\u00e9putation, de mes nombreux articles, en comparant ma lettre aux syst\u00e8mes philosophiques les plus orthodoxes, etc&#8230; Nous ne sommes plus en rh\u00e9torique, \u00e0 quoi bon tant de pr\u00e9cautions oratoires pour parler \u00e0 un ami? Ne sais-tu pas que lors m\u00eame que tu me dirais des sottises, je les recevrais comme des preuves de ton amiti\u00e9 pour moi et de ton z\u00e8le pour la v\u00e9rit\u00e9? A plus forte raison quand tu me fais des observations si sages et si amicales. <em>Disputare philosophorum est<\/em>. Cic\u00e9ron ne disputait-il pas avec Atticus? <em>Si parva licet componere magnis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Tu vois que nous sommes d&rsquo;accord sur un point: le danger d&rsquo;une fausse interpr\u00e9tation. Une courte conversation nous mettrait bient\u00f4t d&rsquo;accord sur les autres. Je te remercie encore de tes bons conseils: une autre fois je serai plus circonspect.
