Watchful and hard-working servants<\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus, who rose from the dead and went up to heaven, will not fail to return in his glory.\u00a0 Of course, he wants us to be always watchful and hard-working.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Jesus exhorts all of us to be watchful.\u00a0 And the exhortation sounds urgent, for he repeats it in several ways:\u00a0 \u201cBe watchful!\u00a0 Be alert!\u00a0 Watch!\u201d<\/p>\n

His insistence surely indicates that being watchful is a matter of spiritual life and death.\u00a0 Unless we remain watchful, we will put out our faith, it will be dead.<\/p>\n

So, then, Jesus urges us to be watchful, so we may live our faith, hope and love with liveliness and grace.\u00a0 No, we cannot allow indifference, mediocrity, apathy or self-deception<\/a> take over us.<\/p>\n

In other words, we ought to focus on Jesus.\u00a0 Our whole life should revolve around him and his second coming.\u00a0 And it will do us good to acknowledge that time is running out, that this world in its present form is passing away.\u00a0 This acknowledgment may lead us to take seriously the advice (1 Cor 7, 29-31):<\/p>\n

Let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But let us be careful about those who use the impending coming of Jesus as an excuse not to work.\u00a0 These deserve the admonition:\u00a0 \u201cAnyone who is unwilling to work should not eat.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, our Lord has left us in charge of certain tasks.\u00a0 He does not want us to be asleep, lifeless.\u00a0 There is nothing more contrary to Jesus\u2019 exhortation than doing nothing.\u00a0 We cannot be like those who, \u201cprovided they have enough to eat, do not bother about anything else\u201d (SV.EN XII:81<\/a>).\u00a0 We have to use our talents.\u00a0 We have to help the least of Christ\u2019s brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n

Without grace, of course, we cannot stay watchful.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Without Jesus, we can do nothing.\u00a0 Recognizing we need and depend on him, we will fix our gaze on him as we go through life.<\/p>\n

That is because he is our Redeemer.\u00a0 So, we will cry out to him, saying, \u201cReturn for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your heritage.\u201d\u00a0 He will surely keep those who await his revelation firm to the end.<\/p>\n

Lord Jesus, you stand at the door and knock. \u00a0Make us, watchful and attentive, hear your voice and open the door, so that we may dine together.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n
