{"id":153827,"date":"2017-10-31T20:00:50","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T19:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/?p=153827"},"modified":"2017-11-01T16:18:56","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T15:18:56","slug":"31-ot-dizonreyes-simplicity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/31-ot-dizonreyes-simplicity\/","title":{"rendered":"31st Sunday in Ordinary Time (Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Simplicity that is unusual, yet necessary<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>There is, in Jesus, consistency between thought and word, also between preaching and doing.\u00a0 We are not Christians if we lack such simplicity.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus addresses this time the crowds and his disciples this to reassure them.\u00a0 That is because a religious leader\u2019s bad behavior, lack of simplicity, can easily puzzle and discourage them.<\/p>\n<p>And Jesus makes the point that the distinction between the teaching office and those who hold it is key.\u00a0 One who recognizes that the bad behavior of teachers does not necessarily void official teachings can stay calm and upbeat.\u00a0 After all, it is God who guarantees the efficacy of the office.<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus does not let the bad teachers off the hook.\u00a0 Rather, he strongly denounces their saying one thing and then doing another.\u00a0 He brings to light, besides, their being unbearable, their boastfulness and conceitedness.\u00a0 He also criticizes their craving for others\u2019 recognition and service.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>But nothing of this sort, of this lack simplicity and sincerity, among us who seek to follow Jesus.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Jesus makes it quite clear that one should not follow the example given by professional teachers who turn aside from the way.\u00a0 They cause many to falter in the matter of keeping the law.\u00a0 Instead of imitating them, then, we must be servants of others, if we want to belong to Jesus.\u00a0 We should humble ourselves, rather than exalt ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>We will follow the contagious example of service and humility our Teacher and Master has given us.\u00a0 He washed the feet of his disciples; we will do likewise.\u00a0 We shall imitate the one who did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life for all.\u00a0 Our affection for our brothers, sisters\u2014we have but one Father\u2014should move us to give them our very selves.<\/p>\n<p>In that way, ours will be the simplicity of the poor people who keep the true religion (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1037&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XI:190<\/a>).\u00a0 Like the poor people with living faith, we, who will imitate Jesus, shall never lose patience and hope.<\/p>\n<p>And what happens when we help, with simplicity, those in need, as Jesus did?\u00a0 We surely proclaim his death, his total self-surrender, until he comes. Of course, that was how the mother of Vincentian bishop, <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/237671407\">Andrew E.
