{"id":153714,"date":"2017-08-15T21:24:57","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T19:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/?p=153714"},"modified":"2017-08-15T21:24:57","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T19:24:57","slug":"20-ot-dizonreyes-caring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/20-ot-dizonreyes-caring\/","title":{"rendered":"20th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Caring for those in the outskirts<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>To see Jesus is to see the merciful God who is caring towards those in the outskirts who cry out to him.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus is a Jew.\u00a0 It seems he is even portrayed as siding with those who show their contempt for the Gentiles by calling them dogs or swine.\u00a0 This closed and unbending group of Jews is not caring towards pagans.\u00a0 That is because it thinks they are hopelessly beyond redemption; no mission can save them.<\/p>\n<p>But not all Jews think that way.\u00a0 There is no lack of backers of salvation for all, which the prophet Isaiah teaches.\u00a0 And, in the end, Jesus shows that he cares about the Canaanite woman.<\/p>\n<p>And so, he makes stand the prophecy, &#8220;Let not the foreigner say,&#8230; &#8216;The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.'&#8221;\u00a0 To the shock, then, of those who think they alone are righteous, it is clear that foreigner does not mean beyond salvation.\u00a0 By showing that he is caring, Jesus signals that the wall between Jews and Gentiles is already breaking down.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>The one who is caring overcomes prejudices.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Caring towards the Canaanite woman, Jesus gets to know firsthand her great faith.\u00a0 And her faith is great not just because she does not take no for an answer.\u00a0 She also gives Jesus the right title of Son of David, though she is supposedly a pagan.\u00a0 Which Jewish religious leader would grant him such title?<\/p>\n<p>Much less would a religious leader kneel before him.\u00a0 The Canaanite woman does so and takes the humble pose of worship.\u00a0 And she becomes even more humble as she admits she is not a chosen one.\u00a0 She is only an outsider humbly waiting for a small favor.<\/p>\n<p>With presumptions yielding to facts, prejudices fade in the light of a clear and bright faith.\u00a0 And praising the foreigner, Jesus makes true her wish.\u00a0 Surely, the mission of Jesus embraces all nations.\u00a0 After all, God has mercy on all of us, no matter our nationality.<\/p>\n<p>And this mission, of course, is the mission of all of us who claim to follow Jesus.\u00a0 He expects us to have a caring heart.\u00a0 He does not want us to close ourselves to those whom the world deems expendable.\u00a0 And ours is the command, yes, to associate with the lowly.\u00a0 One with those the world scorns, we find out that these are the ones who keep the true religion (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1037&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XI:190<\/a>).\u00a0 Besides, they embody simplicity, patience, obedience, detachment, as well as committed work, which is a trait of those who are zealous.\u00a0 And they do not teach us to eat up others as though they were bread, but to give ourselves up to feed others.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Lord Jesus, give us a caring heart like yours.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>20 August 2017<br \/>\n20th Sunday in O.T.
