Salt of the earth and light of the world<\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus is the first to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.\u00a0 He appoints the disciples to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world also.<\/h3>\n

First, salt cleans and preserves food.\u00a0 It also seasons it, giving it taste.\u00a0 Hence, to say Jesus is salt is to say he cleanses human life and keeps it from spoiling.\u00a0 He makes it delightful besides, lest we find it as Job did.\u00a0 He lamented, \u201cIs not man\u2019s life on earth a drudgery?\u00a0 Are not his days those of a hireling?\u201d<\/p>\n

Secondly, light is for lighting, helping us to see and do things at night.\u00a0 And it provides orientation when it is dark.\u00a0 Needless to say, this is what Jesus means to human beings.<\/p>\n

And what Jesus means to us is also what he expects his disciples to be.\u00a0 He certainly makes it clear that, unless we carry out our mission, we will not be good for anything.<\/p>\n

Yes, Jesus entrusts to us a mission:\u00a0 \u201cAs the Father has sent me, so I send you.\u201d\u00a0 He does not want us to lock ourselves up in in any way (EG<\/em><\/a>).\u00a0 He commands us to go out of our security and comfort.<\/p>\n

And he breathes on us precisely to equip us for our mission.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit turns us who cling to our cloisters, structures, rules and habits into a \u201cChurch which goes forth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, there is a demand on us to \u201cgo forth to offer everyone the life of Jesus Christ\u201d (EG<\/em> 49).\u00a0 We have to dare \u201cto reach all the \u2018peripheries\u2019 in need of the light of the Gospel\u201d (EG<\/em> 20).\u00a0 And we will let the Spirit move us to go forth to other towns.\u00a0 We will \u201cseek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast\u201d (EG<\/em> 24).\u00a0 Likewise, we will be open to those at the greatest risk and will welcome refugees.<\/p>\n

And we cannot falter, or we will be like the salt that has gone tasteless or a lamp that is under a bushel basket.<\/h4>\n

But true Christians cannot but stay excited.\u00a0 That is because they recognize that their works rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.\u00a0 Truly zealous, they leave no room to laziness or to indiscreet zeal (CRCM XII:11<\/a>).\u00a0 Hence, they do not lose hope even when everything appears to be a lost cause.\u00a0 They know that God will make the light of the merciful and just shine in the darkness.\u00a0 They are certain about this because of the one who, giving his body up and shedding his blood, draws everyone to himself.<\/p>\n

Lord Jesus, you want us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world:\u00a0 grant that, like you, we may season and enlighten.<\/em><\/h4>\n
