(Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Chosen and appointed to bear lasting fruit<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Jesus is the one who has chosen and appointed us to bear fruit.<\/h3>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 chosen way breaks the mold.\u00a0 Unlike the religious leaders who are settled in Jerusalem, he withdraws to Galilee.<\/p>\n<p>His withdrawal to Galilee shows his courage.\u00a0 He has chosen not to turn back as death looms large with the arrest (literally, the handing-over) of John.<\/p>\n<p>Still, brave does not mean reckless.\u00a0 The change of residence spells better protection for Jesus.\u00a0 Nazareth is too close to the seat of government in Sepphoris for comfort.\u00a0\u00a0 Capernaum affords, besides, an easy escape to Decapolis or another political jurisdiction (<em>New Jerome Biblical Commentary<\/em> [1990] 42:20).\u00a0 And one can flee at night by boat on the Sea of Galilee.<\/p>\n<p>No, to flee in order to live to fight another day is not cowardice.\u00a0 Rightly does a saying affirm, \u201cHe that fights and runs away, may turn and fight another day.\u201d\u00a0 The second part of the saying, however, is not altogether reasonable.\u00a0 It says, \u201cBut he who in battle slain, will never rise to fight again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is because, despite Jesus\u2019 cautiousness, he courageously acknowledges that, in the end, his winning lies in defeat.\u00a0 He gloriously rises after his submission to a shameful death.<\/p>\n<h4>Jesus\u2019 way is also different with regard to discipleship.<\/h4>\n<p>Jesus invites disciples.\u00a0 But religious leaders do not take such initiative.\u00a0 Rather, the one who wants to be disciple takes it.\u00a0 And religious leaders prefer someone who is learned like them.\u00a0 In contrast, Jesus calls fishermen, and even a publican.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus calls us where we are.\u00a0 But as his chosen ones, we are not to stay where we are.\u00a0 Jesus expects those he has chosen to work with him in the project of the kingdom of God.\u00a0 This, of course, implies repentance.<\/p>\n<p>Repentance means, in part, turning away from the <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/homilies\/2017\/documents\/papa-francesco_20170106_omelia-epifania.html\">usual fare<\/a>.\u00a0 The Lord of the harvest calls and sends workers to his harvest at all times of the day.\u00a0 To work with him is to become \u201chardworking workers\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1037&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XI:33<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The ones Jesus has chosen go with him to Galilee of the Gentiles.\u00a0 That is to say, they go to the outskirts, to the most helpless at greatest risk.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 chosen ones never use weakness or littleness as an excuse for mediocrity.\u00a0 They feel strong when they are weak and see success in failure.\u00a0 They are like St. Vincent de Paul.\u00a0 Relying on the meaning of the cross, he attributes the success of his preaching in Folleville and in Ch\u00e2tillon to God\u2019s blessing (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1036&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XII<\/a>:7; <a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1034&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">IX:192<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>And the chosen ones sense that the Eucharist, as the \u201cprocession\u201d in Ch\u00e2tillon shows, is the \u201cthe fount and apex of the whole Christian life\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19641121_lumen-gentium_en.html\"><em>LG<\/em><\/a> 11).<\/p>\n<h4><em>Lord, by your grace, we will try with all our strength to give you all the service and faithfulness that you expect of us (<\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1034&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN IX:284<\/a>).<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>22 January 2017<br \/>\n3<sup>rd<\/sup> Sunday in O.T.
