{"id":153344,"date":"2016-12-06T20:00:15","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T19:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/?p=153344"},"modified":"2016-12-06T04:14:28","modified_gmt":"2016-12-06T03:14:28","slug":"3rd-sunday-advent-ross-reyes-dizon-darkness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/3rd-sunday-advent-ross-reyes-dizon-darkness\/","title":{"rendered":"3rd Sunday of Advent (Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Darkness and black clouds that are menacing<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Jesus is the great light that shines on those who dwell in darkness.<\/h3>\n<p>John is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/famvin.org\/en\/2016\/11\/23\/belief-under-pressure\/#comment-44980\">under pressure<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Although relatively young, he feels death is lurking in the darkness.\u00a0 The executioner can come any time to take the prisoner away.<\/p>\n<p>And the darkness of prison and impending death leads perhaps to doubts.\u00a0 Is Jesus the true Messiah who comes with vindication and baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire?\u00a0 Why, then, does he not free his Crier?\u00a0 Moreover, why does he not shatter those who imprison prophets?<\/p>\n<p>It is possible, of course, that asking these questions are the disciples of John.\u00a0 Are they not like those who ask Pope Francis to resolve their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/blog\/edward-pentin\/full-text-and-explanatory-notes-of-cardinals-questions-on-amoris-laetitia\">doubts<\/a>?\u00a0 In any case, both groups find bothersome the darkness of uncertainty and confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus, however, does not answer \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno.\u201d\u00a0 He simply refers them to his works of mercy.\u00a0 If they look at them from the point of view of Isaiah\u2019s prophecy, they will see them as signs of the presence of the kingdom.\u00a0 But if their starting-point is popular expectation, they will take offense at Jesus.\u00a0 That is because Jesus is not the awaited wrathful liberator who will save the righteous and burn the wicked.<\/p>\n<h4>Changing our expectations and imitating Jesus, we pass from darkness to light.<\/h4>\n<p>Not rarely, false expectations lead to disappointment.\u00a0 Change is necessary.\u00a0 And Mary teaches us what this means basically.\u00a0 After hearing that nothing is impossible for God, she passes from, \u201cHow can this be \u2026?\u201d to, \u201cMay it be done to me according to your word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having such faith, we can accept that God may well make roses bloom on Tepeyac in the dead of winter.\u00a0 This Marian faith in almighty God, who turns everything <a href=\"http:\/\/cmglobal.org\/vincentiana\/cgi-bin\/library.cgi?e=q-00000-00---off-0vincenti--00-0----0-10-0---0---0direct-10---4-----dtx--0-1l--11-en-50---20-about-upsideZz-down--00-0-1-00-0-0-11-1-0utfZz-8-00&amp;a=d&amp;c=vincenti&amp;srp=0&amp;srn=0&amp;cl=search&amp;d=HASHe766cbb7c81f0cea9a59aa\">upside-down<\/a>, makes us recognize the true Messiah.\u00a0 He is Jesus, poor and humble, who heals and proclaims the good news to the poor.\u00a0 In the kingdom that he announces, the great people are the little ones.\u00a0 Nobility there means being of low-birth.\u00a0 No wonder, then, that Jesus adds that the least in the kingdom is greater than John.<\/p>\n<p>And to be the least is to do as the Teacher and Master who washes the feet of his disciples.\u00a0 Unless we follow his example of service, hardship and patience, we may end up like Judas.\u00a0 He is not clean, though Jesus washes his feet.\u00a0 He receives a morsel of bread, still he goes out into the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>In the darkness of insecurities, lies, duplicity and prejudices, we should do as Vincent de Paul.\u00a0 He visits the sick and vows to spend the rest of his life in the service of the poor.\u00a0 As a result, he passes from the darkness of doubts to the light of faith (Jacques Delarue).<\/p>\n<h4><em>Lord, make us cast off the works of darkness.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>11 December 2016<br \/>\n3<sup>rd<\/sup> Sunday Advent (A)<br \/>\nIs 35, 1-6a. 10; Jas 5, 7-10; Mt 11, 2-11<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Darkness and black clouds that are menacing Jesus is the great light that shines on those who dwell in darkness.
