(Ross Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Resurrection giving encouragement and hope <\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Jesus is the resurrection and the life.\u00a0 That is why we should not lose hope.<\/h3>\n<p>Some Sadducees try to show that, in view of levirate marriage, belief in the resurrection is absurd.\u00a0 In rebuttal, Jesus unmasks their lack of logic and their ignorance.<\/p>\n<p>First, he rejects their logic.\u00a0 What is absurd is to presume that what we do in the present life will be what we will do in the coming life.\u00a0 But no, the risen from the dead do not marry and remarry.\u00a0 They no longer have to multiply, for in the world beyond there is no earth to fill or subdue.\u00a0 Their number does not decrease because of death, for they can no longer die and are like angels.<\/p>\n<p>To be like angels means, in part, to look always upon the face of the heavenly Father. \u00a0Hence, one can say that the ecstasy of the children of the resurrection comes from their intimate contemplation of God.\u00a0 Ecstasy is not a product, then, of conjugal intimacy.\u00a0 And in the presence of the reality of Christ\u2019s perfect union with his Church, one has no need for the sacrament of matrimony.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, Jesus questions the Sadducees\u2019 knowledge.\u00a0 They only accept the doctrinal authority of the Pentateuch.\u00a0 Yet they seem to ignore Ex 3, 6.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus does not say, of course, that there is explicit reference to the resurrection in these five books.\u00a0 But he makes clear that the resurrection is understood in the cited passage.\u00a0 Jesus plays with the present tense in \u201cI am [not I was] the God of Abraham \u2026.\u201d\u00a0 This leads Jesus to conclude that God is God of the living, not of the dead.<\/p>\n<h4>Affirming the resurrection, Jesus offers us hope.<\/h4>\n<p>We humans are poor, corruptible, and inclined to hopelessness.\u00a0 But Jesus\u2019 Good News about the resurrection encourages us.\u00a0 Our unfaithfulness should not even discourage us.\u00a0 That is because the throne of God\u2019s mercy is the greatness of the faults he forgives (<a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1037&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN XI:130<\/a>).\u00a0 In effect, Jesus challenges us also to affirm the resurrection and to be credible witnesses of his own resurrection.\u00a0 Do we affirm what he affirms?\u00a0 Are we credible witnesses?<\/p>\n<p>Does not our worrying too much about our physical well-being indicate that we are quite satisfied with earthly goods?\u00a0 Do we really think of what is above?\u00a0 Do we not remain in our hopelessness that shows itself in the current politics of division and of blame?\u00a0 Are we as brave as the seven brothers and their mother, showing thus our belief in the resurrection?\u00a0 Do we really believe that the Lord will strengthen us and guard us from the evil one?<\/p>\n<p><em>Lord Jesus, make us embody the Eucharistic proclamation, \u201cLord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>6 November 2016<br \/>\n32<sup>nd<\/sup> Sunday O.T.
