{"id":149675,"date":"2016-07-06T19:30:18","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T17:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/?p=149675"},"modified":"2016-07-09T21:52:40","modified_gmt":"2016-07-09T19:52:40","slug":"fifteenth-sunday-in-ordinary-time-rosalino-reyes-dizon-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/fifteenth-sunday-in-ordinary-time-rosalino-reyes-dizon-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Rosalino Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>In Jesus dwells all the fullness; those who treat the helpless with mercy are surely partakers of his fullness.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAnd who is my neighbor?\u201d asks a scholar of the law who wants to justify himself.\u00a0 He is also one of those experts who like to test Jesus.\u00a0 They think they have the fullness of all that one needs to know about the law.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus answers with a parable that does not fail to affirm the teaching:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do not think I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.\u00a0 I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Samaritan, unexpectedly, is the one who fulfills the law to its fullness.\u00a0 He does so better than the priest and the Levite.\u00a0 The righteousness of the half-pagan, unclean in the eyes of the Jews, surpasses the righteousness of the first two who are, by profession, observant Jews.\u00a0 Without doubt, the Samaritan represents Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus takes pity on the crowds, abandoned like sheep without a shepherd.\u00a0 Hence, he decides to pasture them himself.\u00a0 He looks for the lost sheep and gathers the astray.\u00a0 He bandages the wounded and cures the sick.\u00a0 He goes around proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom and curing every disease and illness.\u00a0 Like the prodigal son\u2019s compassionate father, Jesus welcomes sinners with tender mercy.\u00a0 He is near to those in need, a neighbor to them.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to those who have come before him to steal, slaughter and destroy, Jesus comes so that the sheep may have life.\u00a0 He takes pity on the widow of Nain, and he immediately raises her son back to life.\u00a0 Lazarus\u2019 death troubles him deeply, so he commands his dead friend to come out of the tomb.\u00a0 And so that the sheep may enjoy life to its fullness, the Good Shepherd lays down his life for them.<\/p>\n<h4>Death becomes inevitable for the one who cannot remain indifferent in the face of so much misery.<\/h4>\n<p>That is because religious practitioners of strict observance cannot tolerate Jesus\u2019 pastoral approach.\u00a0 He associates, for example, with sinners and outcasts.\u00a0 He also heals on the Sabbath.\u00a0 No, he does not let the law annul mercy.\u00a0 Nor does he put the letter ahead of the spirit; the letter kills and stifles the spontaneity of the spirit.\u00a0 Insisting on justice, mercy and faithful neighborliness, he ends up crucified because of the active intervention on the part of those who neglect the weightier matters of the law.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus gives his body up and sheds his blood.\u00a0 He thus reveals the fullness of God\u2019s love for sinful and half-dead humanity.\u00a0 All those who do the same as the Good Samaritan receive justification from such fullness. \u00a0We can never justify ourselves.\u00a0 Justification means being full of Jesus Christ (cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/via.library.depaul.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1025&amp;context=vincentian_ebooks\">SV.EN I:276<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Lead us, Lord, to the fullness of salvation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>July 10, 2016<br \/>\n15<sup>th<\/sup> Sunday in O.T.
