Troubled unto a troubling death<\/em><\/p>\n

Human misery leaves Jesus troubled, and he seeks that other people\u2019s miseries leave us likewise troubled.<\/h5>\n

The disciples and a large crowd accompany Jesus to Nain. \u00a0A large crowd from Nain is with a widow at her only son\u2019s funeral procession.\u00a0 The stage is set for a showdown between life and death.\u00a0 The \u201ccombat stupendous\u201d that ensues, however, leaves the crowd awed, rather than troubled.\u00a0 The account says:<\/p>\n

Awe seized them all, and they glorified God, crying out, \u201cA great prophet has appeared among us.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Surely, these people remember the prophets Elijah and Elisha.\u00a0 The former raised to life the only son of the widow of Zarephath, and the latter, the only son of a Shunammite woman.<\/p>\n

The combat is even more stupendous, for it does not foster worse violent enmities like those arising between the worshipers of the Lord and the worshipers of Baal.\u00a0 As he takes pity on the woman with a double portion of heartaches, Jesus effectively declares himself one with her and her fellow citizens.\u00a0 The one who\u00a0 is \u201cdeeply troubled,\u201d i.e.<\/em>, \u201cangry and very agitated<\/a>\u201d\u2014according to the evangelist John in reference to Lazarus\u2019 return to life\u2014 annuls the distinction between those from Naim and those from Capharnaum.\u00a0 He gets rid of all fanaticism, like Paul\u2019s, before his conversion.<\/p>\n

Jesus puts a halt to \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d (cf EG<\/em><\/a> 33).\u00a0 He wants every crowd accompanying him to be troubled.\u00a0 He seeks that we who claim to be his followers pass from death to life through our effective love for our brothers and sisters.\u00a0 Compassionate love does not allow those who have nothing to go hungry.\u00a0 If we neglect those who are in need, we deny the truth about the death that leads to life, which we proclaim at the Lord\u2019s Supper.\u00a0 According to 1 Jn 3, 16:<\/p>\n

The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us. \u00a0So we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus does not want any of his disciples to be \u201ca caricature of a Christian,\u201d without charity and lacking in humanity (see SV.EN XII:222<\/a>).\u00a0 He expects us to take responsibility for each other, giving some food ourselves to those we would rather send away.\u00a0 He equips us for wondrous deeds, which are not possible for us, however, unless we remain responsible in not so important matters of ordinary life.<\/p>\n

In brief, Jesus, troubled, hands himself over for us.\u00a0 He thus takes us from the lap of our sorrowful Mother Church, so that he may give us back to her alive, with a beating, troubled, and compassionate heart.<\/p>\n

Lord Jesus, make us what you are, the living and troubling image of the compassionate and gracious<\/em> God.<\/em><\/p>\n
