{"id":145780,"date":"2016-01-06T09:32:33","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T08:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/?p=145780"},"modified":"2016-07-12T17:59:12","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T15:59:12","slug":"baptism-of-the-lord-rosalino-reyes-dizon-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/baptism-of-the-lord-rosalino-reyes-dizon-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Baptism of the Lord (Rosalino Reyes Dizon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Solidarity with Jesus and our neighbor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By being in solidarity with us, Jesus equips us for solidarity that will lead us to accept those we find difficult to accept.<\/p>\n<p>All the people come to John to be baptized. In solidarity with them, Jesus, without knowing any sin, submits humbly and prayerfully to the \u201cbaptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On being baptized, the one mightier than the Baptist reveals himself as divine solidarity with fragile humanity. It is not that he has not always been God\u2019s solidarity with human beings: he is \u201cGod-with-us\u201d from his conception; only that now he is so manifested for everybody to see.<\/p>\n<p>So that everyone may know, Jesus is confirmed Son of God, of course, beloved, with whom God is well pleased. The confirmation refers back to Ps 2, 7, \u201cYou are my son,\u201d and to angel Gabriel\u2019s \u201cSon of the Most High.\u201d But \u201cbeloved\u201d and \u201cwith you I am well pleased\u201d also point to the Lord\u2019s chosen Servant, with whom he is pleased.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the Son is manifested also as the Suffering Servant who, in solidarity with those racked with pain and suffering, justifies us by bearing all our iniquities. The Servant is gentle and firm: he does not break a bruised reed; nor does he give up \u201cuntil he establishes justice on the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By being made manifest as the Suffering Servant, Jesus, \u201cequally gentle and firm,\u201d to quote St. Vincent de Paul, gives us a glimpse of his future. Affirms Heb 5, 8-9: \u201cSon though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for those who obey him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If we who are baptized in Christ really obey like him, we are assured of salvation. But since God does not save us \u201cmerely as individuals, without bond or link between one another,\u201d but rather as a people (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19641121_lumen-gentium_en.html\">LG<\/a><\/em> 9), our baptism means incorporation not only into Christ but also into his community.<\/p>\n<p>It goes without saying that just as Jesus\u2019 baptism, along with his confirmation, means communion and solidarity, so also our baptism, along with our confirmation, means the same.
