{"id":109766,"date":"2014-09-06T07:17:10","date_gmt":"2014-09-06T05:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/?p=109766"},"modified":"2016-07-12T18:04:16","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:04:16","slug":"twenty-third-sunday-in-ordinary-time-jose-antonio-pagola-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vincentians.com\/en\/twenty-third-sunday-in-ordinary-time-jose-antonio-pagola-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Jos\u00e9 Antonio Pagola)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>He is in our midst<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although Jesus\u2019 words that Matthew recorded are of great importance for the life of Christian communities, they rarely attract the attention of commentators and preachers.\u00a0 This is Jesus\u2019 promise: <strong>\u201cW<\/strong><strong>here two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.\u201d<\/strong> Jesus is not thinking of celebrations attended by huge crowds, like those at St. Peter\u2019s Square in Rome.\u00a0 Though there are only two or three, there he is among them.\u00a0 It is not necessary that the hierarchy be present; there is no need for many to gather together.<\/p>\n<p>What is important is that \u201cthey are gathered together,\u201d not scattered, not opposing each other, <strong>not discrediting one another<\/strong>.\u00a0 What is decisive is that they come together \u201cin his name,\u201d that they listen to his call, identify with his project of bringing about God\u2019s kingdom, that Jesus be the center of their small group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This living and real presence of Jesus is what should animate, guide and sustain the small communities of his followers<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is Jesus who has to breathe life into their prayer, their celebrations, their projects and activities.\u00a0 This presence is the \u201csecret\u201d of every living Christian community.<\/p>\n<p>We Christians cannot gather together in our groups and communities in just any manner, say, <strong>by force of habit, out of passivity or just to fulfill some religious obligation<\/strong>.\u00a0 We may be many, or only a few, perhaps.\u00a0 But what is important is that we are gathered together in his name, attracted by his person and by his project of making a world that is fit for humans.<\/p>\n<p>We need <strong>to reawaken our awareness that we are Jesus\u2019 communities<\/strong>.\u00a0 We gather to listen to his Gospel, to keep his memory alive, to catch his Spirit, to welcome in ourselves his joy and his peace, to announce his Good News.<\/p>\n<p>The future of the Christian faith depends for the most part on what we Christian do in our concrete communities these next decades.\u00a0 <strong>What Pope Francis can do in the Vatican is not enough<\/strong>.\u00a0 Nor can we put our hope in a handful of priests who may be ordained these coming years.\u00a0 Our only hope is Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>We are the ones who have to center our Christian communities in the person of Jesus as the only force that can regenerate our worn-out and routine faith.\u00a0 He is the only person who is capable of attracting today\u2019s men and women.\u00a0 He is the only one who can engender a new faith in these times of unbelief.\u00a0 <strong>The renewal of the Church\u2019s centers of authority is urgent.\u00a0 Reform decrees are necessary.
