From the translator’s preface:

This work presents most completely the virtue of the saint, and marks most fully and clearly his ideas and teachings. It specifically treats, as its title indicates, of the virtues of the saint and his spiritual doctrine. The words of the saint himself are given. The entiue book is scarcely other than the writings and discourses of the saint arranged and brought to bear on particular points. It is, as the author well remarks, a complete compendium of the writings of St. Vincent de Paul.
