Frederic Ozanam (1813-1853), is the author of “A Pilgrimage to the Land of the Cid,” his charming little narrative of a tour through Spain. It is the product of a man failing in health, but one whose soul is cheerful and healthy. The author is a pilgrim to the Shrine of Compostella, that is, of St. James the Apostle, through whom Spain received the Christian faith. He has given us a lively picture of the country, of the habits and manners of the people, the origin and early stages of Spanish literature. It is a little, unpretending volume, showing Ozanam’s love for Spain, and his thorough knowledge of her character, history, and literature.
